HAIKOU, China - The PGA TOUR announced The R&A Chief Executive Peter Dawson, who also serves as the President of the International Golf Federation, as the recipient of the 2011 David Chu Award at a ceremony held during the Omega Mission Hills World Cup in Haikou, China. The award is named after Dr. David Chu, who passed away earlier this year, and recognizes those who have been instrumental in developing golf in China.
As Chief Executive, Dawson leads The R&A’s efforts to encourage the playing of golf globally. The R&A distributes funding to support coaching programs and junior golf, which is channeled through various grassroots organizations. Projects all over the world, in China and beyond, benefit from R&A assistance, whether in the form of coaching visits, junior golf equipment or capital to help build and develop golf facilities. The R&A’s aim is to encourage more people to play golf in more places, more often.
“Dr. Chu’s impact on the game of golf in China is unparalleled,” Dawson said. “It is an honor to accept an award bearing his name. I hope our worldwide efforts at The R&A and with the International Golf Federation can mirror the positive impact that Dr. Chu achieved in China.”
Dawson played an integral role in the campaign to have golf named as an Olympic sport beginning with the 2016 Olympic Games, helping to promote the game worldwide. The Olympics will help to bring funds and attention to golf in countries that otherwise may not have give as much support to the game.
“Peter has been a major supporter for the growth of golf in China for many years,” said Tenniel Chu, Vice Chairman of Mission Hills Golf Club. “As someone who shared my father’s vision for the game’s bright future in China, we’re so pleased to see Peter’s contributions formally recognized.”
“Peter Dawson personifies everything the David Chu Award stands for,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem. “It is fitting that Peter is being honored as the first person other than Dr. Chu to receive the award that carries Dr. Chu’s name. Peter and The R&A have brought golf to many who would not otherwise have had the opportunity to learn from the positive life lessons that our sport teaches.”
